Winter is just around the corner, and let’s face it, the winter climate can be tough on your skin. Harsh winds, cold temperatures, and dry air can leave your skin feeling dehydrated and stressed due to the lack of natural oils produced. Learning to take preventative measures to prepare your skin for winter is a must.

To help reduce the effects of the drastic weather change, here’s a deeper look into the major winter skin concerns and best practices to prepare your skin for the winter season.

Major Winter Skin Concerns:

1. Dry and Flaky Skin:

The dry, cold air and drop in humidity can cause the water in our skin to evaporate quickly, leaving our skin feeling dry and tight with a flaky look. The dryness can also be caused by factors aside from the cold, such as increased indoor heating, and hot baths and showers. It’s important to ramp up your skin’s hydration through heavier moisturizers and specialized treatments.

2. UV Damage:

The summer months may have left your skin damaged from the prolonged exposure to the sun resulting in pigmentation, decreased elasticity and more. While there is less sunlight in the winter, UV rays, particularly UVA are still present. It’s always recommended to wear sunscreen daily to protect your skin year round and to prevent further damage. We also recommend seeking treatments that reverse the signs of sun damage caused from the summer to restore and improve your skin during the off season.

3. Irritation and Redness:

A change in season means your skin will also experience changes which may lead to irritation and redness. These conditions may persist throughout the cold winter months from the lack of moisture in the skin during the cold seasons, which can lead to a winter rash.

How to Treat Them:

Rejuvenate your dry & flaky skin with Jet Peel and BelaMD treatments

To achieve hydrated and glowing skin throughout the winter, investing in specialized treatments can leave your skin feeling refreshed, moisturized and bright. Here are some of the treatments we offer at MunkMD that can help improve your skin during the harsh winter months:

  1. Jet Peel is a non-invasive procedure used to combat signs of aging, dry skin and acne. During treatment, pressurized streams of air penetrate into the deep layer of your skin to the dermis layer, to deliver cleansers and serums like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and more. Jet Peel is suitable for all skin types and improves the skin’s texture and hydration levels.
  2. The BelaMD treatment is designed to treat a variety of skin concerns through 5 steps: (1). Diamond microdermabrasion, (2). Hydrogen water, (3). Deep muscle stimulation, (4). Serum infusion, (5). Eletroporation. With 4 serums to choose from, the Calm & Hydrate serum is the optimal solution to treat your wintertime dryness.

Reverse sun damaged skin with IPL and Picoway treatments

To reverse UV damage accumulated over the summer season, consider treatments that target the signs of age spots, wrinkles, lesions, etc. Since laser treatments should never be performed on tanned skin, here are some of our treatments that can help to improve UV damage, recommended during the winter months:

  1. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses Lumecca™ light technology to improve skin texture, redness, broken veins, blotchiness and brown spots. IPL treatments must be performed on untanned skin and will increase sensitivity to the sun, making it important to avoid sun exposure post-procedure.
  2. Picoway™ uses the Pico laser device to target unwanted skin irregularities such as dark spots, pigmented lesions and fine lines. The treatment must also be performed on untanned skin, making the winter the best time to start Picoway™ treatments.

Change up your skincare routine

Taking care of your skin during the winter will look different than your summer skincare routine. The skin needs more moisture, more often. You may need to apply lotion often and avoiding fragranced products can help to soothe irritation and redness. If you’re accustomed to using a light lotion, you may need to switch to a heavier cream. Search for products that contain ultra-hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid to replenish lost moisture and to achieve an all-over softer feel. Adjusting the skincare products you use as we head into the winter will help to prepare your skin for the season.
