5 Holiday Skincare Mistakes and How to Fix Them

The holiday season is approaching, which means more hustle and bustle, but also wanting to look good for all the celebrations! Our skin experts want to make sure your holidays don’t throw your skin a little off balance.

Here are the biggest skincare mistakes we’re likely to make around the holidays, and what to do about them:

1. Treating your skin the same all year round
The shift in seasons can be harsh on the skin. If you haven’t already, take the holiday time as a cue to give your skin some TLC. Beyond tailoring your regular skincare routine to the season, you should also be doing different treatments at different times of the year. For example, fall and winter are the best time for laser treatments, and a break from work may be the perfect time to do treatments requiring downtime.

2. Forgetting your routine on vacation
When it comes to skincare, consistency is key! Try not to neglect your regular routine, as enticing as it may be to skip it while travelling or simply while enjoying time off. If you go on a trip, don’t forget your at-home regimen, and take the destinations’ climate into consideration. As always, don’t forget sunscreen!

3. Overdoing food and drink, and lacking sleep
One of the best parts of the holidays is the food. Enjoy but try not to overdo it, because sugary foods or those with a high glycemic index cause inflammation and actually worsen existing skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea. Additionally, alcohol also causes dehydration and inflammation that can affect the skin.

Getting enough sleep is integral to our overall well-being, but did you know it also affects the skin? With all the excitement and events during the holidays, it can be hard to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Sleep is when the body repairs itself, and consistently lacking will begin to show aging effects as well as increase stress levels.

4. Ignoring external factors
It’s important to consider external factors, such as the weather and the environment, and their effects on the skin. Cold weather dries the skin, so stay hydrated, and consider investing in a humidifier for the home.

We can’t control external factors such as pollution. That’s why it’s so important to do what we can to protect the skin and to repair any damage. Our top tips in this domain are to wear moisturizing products to repel external impurities, and to always wash your face at the end of the day to remove products and dirt.

5. Not removing makeup before bed
This seemingly minor mistake gets its own shout-out because it’s actually a big deal! Sleeping with makeup on clogs the pores and increases bacteria. Always wash your face before bed! This is one of the simpler things that we can do to keep the skin healthy.

Now that you know how to deal with these common skin problems that arise during the holidays, you can focus on enjoying time with your loved ones!
Happy holidays!
