Glowing, Healthy Skin: The CO2 Laser Treatment
- Posted on: Dec 10 2018
Just like the fashion world, the skincare world has trends that come and go. At MunkMD Dermatology Clinic, we believe in a timeless approach to achieving younger, healthy skin. While we do pay close attention to trends and the latest research and technologies, we prioritize lasting wellness above all. Trends tend to focus on more short-term cosmetic treatments. At MunkMD, we know that the best treatments address both beauty and health! One of our tried and true favourites for contributing to your skin’s health and enhancing your beauty is the Fractional CO2 laser treatment.
What does it treat?
The Fractional CO2 laser treats all skin types. It can be used on many different areas, including the entire face, neck, hands, chest, and legs. It can even be used on the delicate and sensitive skin around the eyelids and mouth.
The CO2 laser addresses a range of skin issues such as deep wrinkles, acne and surgical scars, sun damage, and more. As we age, collagen and elastin fibers in our skin weaken, but the CO2 treatment is great as a rejuvenating treatment at any age. It excels at correcting uneven skin texture and can be used to treat both superficial and deeper layers of the skin. This makes the treatment remarkably customizable to your specific wants and needs! Additionally, it has incredible precision and can treat individual moles, age spots, and scars.
How does it work?
The CO2 laser doesn’t just smooth over your skin. It actually penetrates the skin with a beam of light that is divided, or “fractionated”, into thousands of tiny points. The skin’s reaction to these points is to repair them by replacing the skin cells.
This treatment is great for anyone wanting a skin refresh, without the long downtime associated with conventional resurfacing procedures. The procedure may produce mild discomfort, but we apply a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment to help ensure your comfort.
The recovery period is between 4-7 days, and the healing side effects may produce redness and peeling. Cold compresses and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may help further reduce any discomfort.
When to get the treatment?
The best time to get the CO2 laser treatment is in the winter months, because you need to avoid sun exposure post-treatment. While still healing, if you do go outside you must wear sunscreen to protect the heightened sensitivity of your skin.
