5 Things to Avoid to Keep your Skin Healthy this Summer
- Posted on: Jun 29 2022
It can be easy to neglect our skincare routines during the summer months. While our skin is not as dry as it is in the winter, the sunshine gives us that sun-kissed glow that we all know and love. However, just because summer is in the air, that does not mean we should be easing up on our skincare regimens. In fact, we should remain more diligent in order to protect the skin from increased sun exposure, humidity, and sweat.
We mapped out the top 5 things you should avoid this summer to keep your skin health in check all summer long:
1. Laser Hair Removal
Although not recommended due to increased sun exposure in the summer, laser hair removal can still be done in the summer months if additional precautions are taken to prevent discoloration, burns, and hyperpigmentation. We recommend avoiding sun exposure the week before and after your treatment, and never leaving your house without using SPF 30 or higher.
2. UV Rays
We’re constantly told to protect our skin from UV rays year-round. However, increasing your protection during the warmer months is critical. Prolonged UV ray exposure can take a toll on your skin, causing fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, and increasing your risk of skin cancer. Lather on sunscreen daily with a minimum of SPF 30. Don’t forget to reapply frequently and spend some time in the shade!
3. Heavy Makeup
Wearing heavy makeup in hot and humid weather puts you at a higher risk of developing breakouts. Makeup mixed with sweat and your skin’s natural oils can block your pores, causing breakouts and bumpy, uneven skin texture. Opt for a good summertime makeup routine that includes a primer, light coverage foundation, or BB cream.
4. Refined Sugars & Carb-Heavy Foods
While we often like to indulge more in the summer months, certain lifestyle and dietary choices can impact our skin health. Diets filled with fried, processed foods, or refined sugars can lead to skin concerns such as inflammation, irritation, breakouts, and even premature ageing. Be mindful and remember that moderation is key to keeping that luscious summer glow.
5. Dehydration
The summer’s hot and humid days will accelerate our body’s water loss, leaving both the body and skin dehydrated. When we are dehydrated, we experience low energy levels and fatigue, which cause the skin to lose elasticity. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and consume lots of fruits and vegetables that are excellent sources of water, such as melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Aim for 7-9 8-ounce glasses of water a day and even more if you’re doing physical activity outdoors.
